Some say you should avoid politics and religion on a work-based site, but to be an artist, is to be political. And it isn’t hard to look at Instagram or even some of my art to see I have opinions on world views.
Anyway, the protests have been fun. It doesn’t magically change things, but it is better than being at home and complaining. And there is something magical about being surrounded by thousands of people who feel the same way about things.
I know the Art Director’s Guild (IATSE 800) have been meeting up and participating as a group, but I never have found them, unfortunately. As a union, it is important to be involved with politics to protect unions, workers’ rights, etc.
And of course, I had to make signs. I used a combination of Cricut, hand signage, regular writing, painting, and some collage. I see a lot of signs using AI art, and they have been kind of clever – but I opted for collage to get my point across, even if it’s a bit goofy. At the last protest, I got photographed a lot. it was fun. And when my daughter and I went to the defend National Parks protest, I painted a Lorax protest sign, and that seemed to be appreciated.
